THE DOGS WHO CAME HOME

Before humans could go to space, the world needed proof that life could survive the journey. Belka and Strelka flew aboard Korabl‑Sputnik 2, spent about 25 hours in orbit, and returned home safely on 20 August 1960.

Their successful mission gave scientists confidence to send humans into space — a direct step on the road to Yuri Gagarin and a new era for humankind.
